User have found the Microsoft Surface Laptop provides the right balance between performance and price in the traditional notebook space. But what if you’re not quite ready for the restrictive benefits of Windows 10 S? Thankfully Microsoft have provided owners a free upgrade from Windows 10 S to Windows 10 Pro until March 2018.
Windows 10 S takes on Chrome OS.
The Microsoft Surface Laptop has been received with positive reviews since its release, you can read a great post by Dieter Bohn for The Verge. The Surface Laptop is a clear attempt by Microsoft to claw back some of the education market share that has been dominated by the Google Chromebook. This is understandably so with Google Chromebook commanding 58% of the K-12 market in the US, according to consulting firm Futuresource. Microsoft is keen to reign in this lead with its own security minded operating system, enter Windows 10 S.
Windows 10 S is inextricably linked to the Microsoft Store “Everything that runs on Windows 10 S is downloaded from the Windows Store” says Microsoft’s Windows chief Terry Myerson. Edge is the only supported browser and protection is provided by Windows Defender.
However, a look in the Windows Store shows a distinct lack of app choices at the moment. With some of the more popular apps are either not available or not supported on the Surface Laptop. With such a big push by Microsoft into the education space and a bold move of pre-installing Windows 10 S, Microsoft are hoping the developers will heed the call in producing apps.
Upgrade from Windows 10 S to Windows 10 Pro extended.
The great news is that Surface Laptop is not bound to the shackles of Windows 10 S, should the version not suit your needs. Microsoft have made the upgrade from Windows 10 S to Windows 10 Pro a simple process and free for what was an initial deadline of December 2017. This has now been extended to March 2018 as per this blog from Microsoft in September this year.
The process is simple, you just need to go to the ‘settings menu’ on your device or visit the Microsoft Store. If can’t decide right now, you will still be able to upgrade after March 2018 for $79.
Best of all, as the available apps in the Windows store improve you can always side-grade back to windows 10 S and enjoy the enhanced security features once more. See this great post by Zac Bowden at Windows Central with more information.
