Microsoft refreshes our favourite Surface devices
Microsoft announces refreshed Surface devices and new ready for business program – Surface for Business. New Surface Pro 6, Surface Laptop 2 and Surface Studio 2 – Ready to order!
Last week Microsoft announced some refreshed Surface devices with the release of the New Surface Pro 6, Surface Laptop 2 and Surface Studio 2. There was nothing new like the Surface Go from a few months ago, except for Surface Headphones which Australia won’t be seeing any time soon.
The upgrades were missing some additions that would have been welcomed, but with the Surface family being some of our favourite laptops, the product diversity is already there and the old adage “if it ‘aint broke, don’t fix it” must have been ringing in the ears of the Surface team this year.
We are happy to see the new Intel 8th generation processors in use with the Surface Pro 6 and Surface Laptop 2, as they bring performance and power improvements that are always welcome. Providing from 60 – 80% improvement on last year’s models.
Unfortunately, they haven’t added USB-C, with its display, data and power connectivity all in one port. But to be honest we would prefer the USB 3.0 with the traditional Type A connector for all of our existing storage and peripherals, without the need for adapters had they chosen to remove this and replace it with the Type C. USB-C connectivity can be added if required via the recently introduced Surface Connect to USB-C Adapter.
Form factor and chassis design remain the same with the big addition being the new matt black colour which looks great on the Alloy casings. This new Black colour will be the only way to show off you have the newest Surface device. The addition of Black to the Surface Laptop family sees the removal of the Graphite Gold colour from last year’s model.

Surface for Business
One of the biggest bits of news for us that would have missed the spotlight of mainstream media is the introduction of Surface for Business, which provides added value for our clients who purchase the commercial models from us, rather than the consumer models available in retail stores and online like the Microsoft Store.
Surface for Business brings together enhanced hardware, software and services to better meet the requirements of the Modern Workplace. Some difference to the consumer retail models are highlighted below.
Windows 10 Pro
Comes standard on Surface for Business products—offering advanced security protections, enterprise manageability, and enhanced productivity tools. Some of the great features of Windows 10 Pro for our clients are simplified control and management. Features like Azure Active Directory and Domain Join, MDM and Windows AutoPilot make the devices easier to deploy and manage. BitLocker not only provides device encryption, but also peace of mind over lost devices and passwords.
Advanced Exchange
In addition to the standard hardware warranty, commercial customers get Advanced Exchange—a warranty service with expedited device replacement, at no additional cost. You can hold onto your device until you receive your new one within 2-5 days. Don’t be left hanging while you return your faulty device and wait for a replacement to be received. You also get exclusive access to enhanced and upgraded warranties out to 3 or 4 years via the Microsoft Extended Hardware Service Plan with options for Complete for Business which provides accidental damage cover.
Unique 8th Gen Intel Core processors
The Surface Pro 6 for Business and Surface Laptop 2 for Business also receive a unique commercial chipset for the i5 SKUs. These i5 Surface for Business devices are coming with improved i5-8350U processors that provide around a 10% real world improvement against the i5-8250U in the retail consumer models This year’s models have up to over 60% faster than last year’s Surface Pro and Surface Laptop.
